Claire Cawte is a Welsh textile Designer maker in the field of feltmaking. This workshop
will entail working with native fleece and producing a felted vessel.

1.30-3.30pm Small Fabric Paperweights MS1

Make a personal design whilst learning a variety of hand stitches with some basic embroidery. You will be able to your knowledge for other uses. Suitable for all levels.

1.30-3.30pm Creative Embroidery with Suzi Park MS2

Suzi Park is the founder of the company Make it in Wales. She will be teaching free stitch
embroidery with added Applique techniques using a sewing machine. You will need to have
some experience on how to use a machine but new beginners are welcome. These exciting
techniques will give you plenty of ideas for further projects.

11-1pm Make a Silver Ring with Maggie Cross  MS2

Maggie Cross is a recent jewellery design graduate from Birmingham University and uses casting
techniques to make her jewellery. Have fun making something special with a personal touch. In
the two hours with Maggie you’ll carve a unique, one of a kind ring using jewellers wax and a
selection of tools. Your bespoke wax ring will then be sent to a casting company in Birmingham’s
Jewellery Quarter who will cast the wax into solid silver using the process of lost wax casting.
Maggie will then hand finish the silver rings in her workshop in West Wales and post them back to
you.

Create a funky felt brooch trimmed with embroidery stitches and buttons, it could be an animal or a floral design and suitable for wearing on jacket lapel or bag.

1.30pm-3.30pm Hand Knitting with Sue James MS2

Sue James has been hand and machine knitting for over 20 years and has recently founded
Cambrian Mountains Wool Community interest company along with two other wool fanatics.
Using Cambrian wool, Sue will be teaching slip-stitch techniques to produce wonderful hand
knitted textures and patterns. These techniques can be taken further to be able to make one of
the lovely cushions which Sue has designed for the Cambrian Wool collection. Not suitable for
complete beginners.

Using traditional mosaic making techniques but using  modern materials.

You will be shown ow to use the tools correctly. Suitable for beginners or improvers

11am-1pm Screen Printing with Emily Skinner MS2

Emily Skinner works to produce interactive sensory designed pieces and has produced printed
scented wallpapers and amazing woven constructed wall hangings made from strips of Birch.
Emily will share her printing practice with you to produce 5 hand screen-printed cards chosen
from a selection of laser cut designs. Working in pairs, each pair will produce 10 cards with two
colours. You will learn about colour separation and registration

We will cover many different techniques of clay work. Making small clay animals to show various techniques such as coils and slab building as well as an introduction to throwing on the wheel. Suitable for beginners and improvers. A Learn Cardiff Workshop.

Helen Rhiannon is an award winning Bridalwear designer, but she also runs very successful craftsewing
workshops in Swansea. Helen manages to take the worry out of sewing and puts the fun
and laughter back in. So if you are in need of gaining a bit more confidence on the sewing
machine, come along to this workshop and make yourself a storage box in lovely pretty printed
fabrics. There will be plenty of fabrics to choose from to buy on the day or you can bring your
own with you if you have something you wish to co-ordinate with at home.

Every Day - Children's Drop In Workshops with Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre & Kings Monkton School

 Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre will be running drop in workshops, every day, inspired by the work of Welsh mixed media artist, Becky Adams. Young visitors can enjoy the Free drop in workshops and take away their creations as a memento of their visit to Cardiff.

Walter Keeler is one of the UK’s leading ceramic artists and has exhibited extensively overseas. Based in South Wales, Walter’s distinct visual language has greatly informed the development of British Studio Pottery for over 3 decades and we are honoured that he is giving a masterclass at Made by Hand.

11am Masterclass with Mark Sanger, woodturner

Showing the processes for the turning and carving of an offset lidded form, merging traditional craft with contemporary design

My work is free flowing of simple form. I believe that it should evolve from the here and now from the initial idea to completion. I may have an idea about what I am going to create, beyond this, my mind is kept open and receptive to changes that evolve along the way. Occasionally it may take a different path than intended.

This method allows me freedom as I work, often an unexpected change happens and should be embraced, this is a major part of the creative process and for me the difference between freedom of expression and constraint.

Wood, mixed media, texture, form and colour feature in my work which is influenced by Far Eastern philosophies, cultures as well the natural forms and textures found in nature.
