Sue Herdman, Editor of Ceramic Review magazine choses her 5 Favourites from Made by Hand
Sue admits to an early obsession with natural forms – objects ‘hewn from the landscape’ or elements such as coastal pebbles and rocks. Those influences sing out in her hand built work, which is made using a combination of two clays. Her Lignums, pictured here, are the results of recent exploration, whilst other pieces come with names that conjure the world that Sue observes: The moon, the sea & everything in-between.
Alex creates fine, tactile objects that are informed by his observations of the textures we might see in everyday life: many drawn from nature. He then adds an element of surprise – something that gives his pieces ‘a sense of opulence’ – adding metal oxides, gold, platinum and copper lustre, which make his pieces gleam.
You’ll find Harriet’s stand in the StartUp section of the show. A 2014 graduate from De Montfort University, Leicester, she works primarily with porcelain, often combining that material with others: a found wooden handle perhaps, or a piece of cork and a bulldog clip. Curious, conceptual and often functional, her pieces are pared down, yet eye-catching.
Sue takes inspiration from tribal art in her work, with her pieces, distilled to the essence – as such art often is – having an abstract, sleek Modernist feel to them. Based in Haverfordwest, she decorates with slips made from local clay, then raku or saggar fires to realise the sophisticated results she achieves.
A potter based in Carmarthenshire, Tim’s work – much of it beautiful tableware – is thrown on a slow turning kick-wheel. His style comes with influences both from the East and the West. The pieces are textural yet tempered with painterly slip – with Tim’s skill being in knowing just how to get the balance between the two.
