Jo Hall, Editor of Embroidery magazine choses her 5 Favourites from Made by Hand
Harriet Elkerton is definitely one to watch – I enjoy the way she builds unexpected relationships between her fine porcelain vessels and other materials. I have one of her conceptual pieces on my desk and I adore it. I’m looking forward to seeing more of her range at the show.
I’m rather a messy baker so am a big fan of a generous linen apron. Helen Round’s pinafores are beautifully made with subtle hand-printed designs and, even better, generous pockets. Once they’re on, they tend to stay on all day.
I’ve always been fascinated by maps. Home Front Vintage rescues silk escape and evasion maps used during WW2 and the cold war, and makes them into homewares with a genuine history. Owner Sara Jane’s passion really comes across – check out her collection of original war-time garments fashioned from these maps on the HV website.
Whether it’s a wall-based stitched work or a sculpture, Ruth Harries’ work comes from the heart. She always has something interesting to say but it is her passion for making, which is so apparent in the work, that really draws one in.
Michelle Griffiths’ work is simply fascinating. She produces contemporary three-dimensional sculptures inspired by the natural rhythm of traditional shibori techniques. Michelle is incredibly knowledgeable about this Japanese art, to which the Western term ‘tie-dye’ simply doesn’t do justice.
